Sevenoaks has a name that sounds fairly straightforward. Seven. Oaks. So why can you find EIGHT famous oak trees beside The Vine?
The story begins with seven oaks planted at The Vine in 1902 to commemorate the coronation of King Edward VII. They weren't the original trees that gave Sevenoaks its ancient name, but they became a famous symbol of the town.
Then came the Great Storm of October 1987.
Six of the seven trees were brought crashing down. For a while, Sevenoaks had effectively become 'One Oak'.
When the trees were replaced, seven new saplings were planted - alongside the one survivor.
And seven plus one rather wonderfully made EIGHT.
So the sight that appears to contradict the town's name is actually a living reminder of one of the most dramatic nights in modern Kent history.
