Canterbury has nearly two thousand years of history beneath its streets - and, inevitably, rather a lot of ghost stories.
One of the city's best-known modern haunting tales is attached to Tiny Tim's Tearoom in St Margaret's Street.
Reports collected about the building say that during restoration work in the 2000s, workmen heard the sounds of children playing on the staircase, unexplained noises from the attic and what sounded like youngsters whispering in a panelled room.
The same accounts say relics associated with children were found during work on the old building.
Does that prove that children haunt the tearoom? No. Ghost stories are stories of reported experiences, not established historical facts, and we are not going to turn folklore into 'proof' just because it makes a better headline!
But that is exactly what makes old-city folklore so intriguing. Buildings survive for centuries, generations pass through them and unexplained experiences become attached to particular rooms, staircases and corners.
In Canterbury - a city packed with medieval lanes, ancient buildings and centuries of human life - Tiny Tim's has earned a place in the city's collection of ghostly tales.
