One of the biggest love stories - and political earthquakes - in Tudor history has a surprising Isle of Sheppey chapter.
In October 1532, Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn stayed for three days at Shurland Castle on Sheppey, the home of Henry's trusted courtier Thomas Cheyne.
At the time, Henry was still married to Catherine of Aragon.
Henry and Anne were travelling onwards to Dover and then Calais, where Henry hoped to gain support from the French king for his attempt to end his marriage to Catherine. What looked like a royal journey therefore had an enormous personal and political purpose behind it.
Only a few months after their Sheppey stay, Henry secretly married Anne in January 1533. Anne was crowned queen that June and their daughter Elizabeth - the future Elizabeth I - was born in September.
The struggle over Henry's first marriage would help transform the religious history of England. Yet tucked into that vast Tudor drama are three days spent at Shurland Castle on the Isle of Sheppey.
